Field Notes #4: Customers Only See the Outcome

June 01, 20261 min read

One thing I’ve realized while building ReadyGetGrow is that customers only see the outcome.

And honestly, that’s how it should be.

If someone calls a business, books an appointment, receives a confirmation, gets a reminder, and everything just works, they don’t care what had to happen behind the scenes to make that possible.

Lately I’ve spent a lot of time building workflows and thinking through customer journeys.

What I’ve learned is that simple experiences are rarely simple underneath.

Every time I think I have something figured out, I uncover three more scenarios I hadn’t considered.

What if they call after hours?

What if they text instead?

What if they miss the appointment?

What if there are duplicate records?

What if they never respond?

What if someone else in the household calls from a different number?

The customer never sees any of that.

They just experience whether things work or they don’t.

It’s made me appreciate how much thought, planning, and operational effort goes into creating experiences that feel easy.

The smoother the experience feels, the more work was probably done behind the scenes to make it feel that way.
